A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
